HopNet — Terms of Use & Community Standards

By using HopNet, you accept these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use HopNet.

1. Who can use HopNet

You must be at least 17 years old to use HopNet.

2. What HopNet is

HopNet is a private, end-to-end-encrypted messenger. You connect only with people you add yourself by scanning their QR code in person. HopNet does NOT match you with strangers and has no random or anonymous chat. Because messages are end-to-end encrypted, no one operating HopNet's infrastructure can read your messages, photos, videos, or calls.

3. Zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users

There is ZERO TOLERANCE for objectionable content or abusive behaviour on HopNet. You agree NOT to use HopNet to send, request, or share any content that is:

• unlawful, or that depicts, promotes, or facilitates the sexual exploitation or abuse of minors;
• harassing, threatening, bullying, hateful, or that incites violence;
• sexually explicit and sent to anyone who has not consented to receive it;
• defamatory, fraudulent, deceptive, or spam;
• infringing on another person's intellectual property or privacy; or
• otherwise objectionable.

You also agree not to harass, threaten, impersonate, or abuse other people.

4. Reporting and blocking

You can report and block any contact from inside any chat: open the chat, tap the menu (⋮) in the top-right corner, then choose "Report contact" or "Block contact". Reporting sends a report to the HopNet team — including the recent messages from that contact so we can review them — and blocks the contact. Blocking disconnects the contact and stops them from contacting you or being re-added until you unblock them in Settings → Blocked Contacts.

5. How reports are handled — within 24 hours

We act on reports of objectionable content within 24 hours. We review each report and, where a user is found to have shared objectionable content or behaved abusively, that user is ejected: they are blocked and can no longer contact or be re-added by the reporting user. Where an identity is found to repeatedly violate these Terms, it may be refused across HopNet in a later app update. Reports involving child sexual abuse material or threats to life may be referred to law enforcement. You can delete any conversation on your device at any time.

6. Your content and the limits of encryption

You are responsible for the content you send. Because HopNet is end-to-end encrypted, message content exists only on your device and your contact's device; HopNet's infrastructure stores only unreadable, encrypted data while a message waits for an offline contact, and deletes it after delivery. Moderation therefore relies on the report and block tools above and on the fact that you only ever receive content from contacts you chose to add.

7. No warranty

HopNet is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We are not responsible for content sent by users.

8. Changes

We may update these Terms. Continuing to use HopNet after an update means you accept the updated Terms.
